Lola Barnes only wants one thing, to get her life under control. No more chasing alphas who abuse and toss away betas like her. No more hiding in her cousin’s apartment licking wounds that won’t heal. Armed with her dream job and her less than dreamy apartment, Lola is ready to start a new chapter of her life without alphas. But that’s easier said than done when one stumbling incident after another leads Lola closer to an alluring pack of captivating men. These alphas are everything Lola dreamed of, but they already have an omega—a playful male model who won’t stop flirting with her. And Lola is only a beta, one who comes with deep scars and an unshakeable aversion to alphas and their powerful presences. If only she could resist their perfect beta, Leo, whose patience and determination to see her heal breaks down one wall after another. When the alpha who all but destroyed Lola tries to start a game of cat and mouse that’s all claws, the safest place for Lola may be the one she’s most terrified of, in the arms of an alpha pack.

I read Baby and the Late Night Howlers and found it to just be “okay” and I didn’t particularly like Lola’s character in that book, although she was only in a few scenes. I wasn’t even planning to read this book but I saw some reviews on GR from folks whose opinions I respect and they were raving about this book so I decided to try the first two chapters just to see… That first two chapters turned into a one-sit reading of the entire book followed by a one-click download of the second book so I could immediately continue with this addictive brilliance. I have read a few different books by Kathryn Moon and am going on record as saying this duology is the best work she has done. In fact, right now this is sitting at the top of my favorite reads of 2020. This book challenged several of my beliefs of what my preferences are when it comes to romance reads. I love RH when it’s done right, and boy was this done right. Typically, I prefer a really strong h, one with a compelling attitude and lots of humor and snark. More of a bad@$$ who doesn’t need saving. That’s not how I would describe Lola (h). I would describe Lola as vulnerable, reserved, sweet but with an inner strength that shines through. I LOVED Lola. The plot line of a victimized female is rather common in the romance genre and in a lot of those cases the fmc is meek, shy, scared and continues to be a rather “innocent” and quiet character that everyone else just adores and shelters through the story. While Lola absolutely experienced trauma, I loved that she still knows her own mind. She still has her own goals. Yes, we see how her past experiences results in insecurity and triggers anxiety attacks, but you also get to see her (with the help of others) climbing out of those holes over and over again. She is strong in her own way and her personality shines as her confidence grows. Her moments of insecurity or anxiety seemed very human and believable. It never felt annoying or overdone for the sake of drama. I also typically prefer the magic number of 3 men in an RH (4 max), well… this book had 6 which normally feels like way too many to feel like you get equal time with all but for some reason it really worked in this story. I think that is in part because there are multiple points of view so we get to really know these characters and the guys were already a pack with bonds and a tight relationship before Lola enters the story. I also normally avoid books that feature MM interactions in the romance. It just doesn’t do it for me. I prefer to see the fmc be the one desired but for some reason it not only didn’t bother me in this story but it added to it in some ways. I think its because of the “bonds” which are so well explained and described that you could see that Lola was just as important and desired by them if not more so than their relationships with each other. A few other thoughts. There is a LOT of sex in this book but it never felt like too much or that it usurped the story line. I think that is because these are really long scenes where the author actually used these scenes to show us the relationship evolution and Lola regaining her confidence and the men seeing her as a vital missing link in their pack. These scenes were vital to the story line but they were also HOT. There is a scene at about the 82% point that blew my mind. Hottest scene I have ever read and I consider myself somewhat seasoned when it comes to romance reads. 😊 Not sure what else to say people. Regardless of any preconceived beliefs of what you think you prefer when it comes to romance reads, I strongly recommend you give this book a go.
