This was a work that I’d bought brand new back in 2013 but could never find the fortitude within myself to actually take up. It wasn’t that I lacked the stomach for school shootings…on the contrary, I’d studied the Columbine shooting event at length, even spending the majority of my 2009 family summer vacation in Littleton making multiple pilgrimages to the school to get every exacting detail that I could. And to a lesser extent I’d researched the Virginia Tech 2007 shooting along with the 2018 Parkland, Florida Stoneham Douglas High School shooting, determining in my own mind that whatever well-meaning and prescriptive gun legislation that would get raised and even passed by Congress following all of these tragedies would mean comparatively little because it was also evident that these trivial changes in the gun laws wouldn’t stop these mindless shootings from continuing.But after finally delving into this book and subjecting myself once again to the absolute horrors of this 2012 crime (it was, of course, the imagining of all those innocent children being massacred that kept me away from it), AND upon learning of the continued failures of not only the victim’s group’s State and Federal lobbies, but of the on-going efforts of programs like the “Sandy Hook Promise” to curtail efforts like assault-rifle citizen ownership and legality, that I became newly incensed. I mean, these were such small children, a depth of depravity so nefariously lower than the sickness demonstrated at Columbine or Parkland that, assuredly, major movement in legislation preventing private ownership of military-style weaponry (at least!) would be drawn-up and in-acted, right? But no….President Obama pleaded and Congress postured and in the end nothing really ever got done and the killings continued (Fort Hood, TX, Charleston, Orlando, Sutherland Springs, TX, Parkland, FL…) while the NRA pretended sorrow but secretly wiped their brows when virtually none of their precious assault rifle rights were removed.OK, off of my soapbox for now. This work by NY Daily News Journalist Lysiak is an immensely comprehensive tome covering essentially the first year of the crime and the important lead up to it. An avowed ‘first on the scene’ reporter, Lysiak provides immaculate details in all areas of his reportage…not only giving a breathtaking (and absolutely heartbreaking) account of that fateful day but also revealing a shocking new detail: Adam Lanza’s initial target was actually Newtown High School, NOT Sandy Hook Elementary…it was, apparently, only when he found Police Officers abstractly milling about at the high school that morning, that he decided on Sandy Hook (this was and still is considered ‘unconfirmed’ information, but I bring it up here because it actually makes more sense when one considers the background and abuse history that Lanza faced.Lysiak painstakingly tracks Lanza’s steps from the very beginning of that day up to his suicide in Victoria Soto’s 1st grade classroom…each shot, each victim is almost laboriously brought out, from his Mother Nancy’s massacre that starts the event to his own ending. What he also does very well is cover the first responder’s actions and thoughts…Newtown Police Officer William Chapman’s ordeal, in particular, is explicitly explained in piteous singularity, giving the reader the almost omnipresent experience of being right there.Lysiak is also profound in this narrative by expanding upon the very circuitous path that got Lanza to this point. The arrested trials and tribulations that Adam’s mother Nancy went through, essentially from birth, as she constantly attempted to find a stabilizing environment for him, are covered broadly as are, unfortunately, her appeasement efforts by affording him numerous channels to high powered weaponry. We see a more and more secluded Adam, sustained by violent video games and web sites, backed by a parent who supports him with sophisticated firearms, left alone for days and weeks at a time when his hatred and planning for a revenge component clearly manifests and, most significantly, manifests unabated in terms of any form of legal or medical interruption.Lysiak’s greatest strength here though, in my view, is two-fold…one, he captures the ‘mental health’ element succinctly and, two, he does yeoman’s work with respect to the victim’s families. For the mental health component, he drives the narrative to what should be the proper conclusion…Adam Lanza, despite the almost heroic efforts of his mother to find proper treatment as well as a median society for him, clearly needed to be institutionalized. There was no hope for this boy and it was evident far earlier than this event…my belief is that she knew this but equivocated as a mother is want to do, hoping for the best. It is cases like these that, to me, somehow State and/or Federal jurisdiction overrides a parent’s misguided view and a clearly dangerous person is isolated and given the help that they need. How that happens, of course, is for brains and leaders far beyond my simple capability.The second strength with this work is both easy for the reader (in terms of readership) and at the same time agonizing…Lysiak talks a great deal about the victims and their personal traits and personalities. This was the most tormenting part of the book for me…each funeral is covered with a snippet of a loving eulogy statement that was spoken, a brilliant addition to this book. I’ve never shed tears reading a book before but actually had to put this down to get through this section…in 2012 my children were already 20 years old and 15 years old but I went back to when my first born passed away from brain cancer at four years old. We knew it was coming (he’d been diagnosed a year earlier so we were somewhat ‘ready’) but the sorrow and devastation is still unspeakable…I cannot imagine what it’s like to send your six or seven year old to school one day and to receive THAT call. That’s the kind emotion that this book emotes and is why I would recommend it highly.
