'A Japan that never was, a future lost, ghosts that are not dead ... not even a partial list of ingredients can do justice to this wonderful cake of a book ... A time-defying thriller' ROBIN HOBBStrange things are happening in Tokyo. As war with Russia looms, the city is plagued by strange electricity storms, while the staff at the British Legation have gone on strike, claiming that the building is haunted. Thaniel Steepleton is sent over from London to act as interpreter, bringing with him his partner, Keita Mori the watchmaker, their adopted daughter, Six, and Mori's clockwork octopus, Katsu. Thaniel is dazzled by life in Tokyo, but he feels increasingly out of his depth – especially when he meets Takiko Pepperharrow, and learns of her connection to Mori. But then Mori disappears, and Thaniel and Takiko's paths diverge as they desperately try to find him. As their searches lead them to snow-steeped prisons and mountainside shrines, Thaniel is faced with the terrifying revelation that Mori's powers are no longer enough to save them – and that the watchmaker's time may have run out.Natasha Pulley's extraordinary new novel, The Kingdoms, will be available in Spring 2021.

4.8 out of 5 stars.I fell in love immediately with Natasha Pulley's beautiful prose and ability to weave magic into our existing world when I read Watchmaker and then The Bedlam Stacks, and Pepperharrow is no different.Pepperharrow is more than atmosphere though - for me to enjoy a book, I also have to be invested in the characters and their emotional journey, and I was completely immersed in Thaniel. His determination, his confusion, his love - he was so real to me. The way he parents Six is lovely, meeting her needs as best he can and not forcing her to conform to what she "should" be. The classism Thaniel deals with is even more obvious in this book, and all the little ways it influences Thaniel's life added even more dimension to his character. I also really enjoyed getting to know Mori better - he's just so fascinating. The plot is intricate and interesting and I totally cracked and spoiled the ending for myself, but it worked out well for me since then I could relax and enjoy watching everything unfold.I also really enjoyed Takiko Pepperharrow. I liked her anger and her honor in fulfilling her promise, even though she didn't want to. Pulley has a gift for writing ambiguous characters - Takiko, Mori, Grace in Watchmaker, Clem in Bedlam Stacks - who are sometimes misguided, or selfish, or incorrect, but who aren't villains or antagonists. They're human and messy, and they have their own point of view. I often end up with mixed feelings about them, but somehow like their existence all the more for that.I loved the little easter egg about what Merrick from Bedlam Stacks has been up to, and I enjoyed seeing Grace and Matsumoto again. Katsu and Owlbert were delightful. This isn't a perfect five-star review for a couple of reasons. There are a few moments that ping my feminist radar, such as how Takiko's story plays out, but not enough to dampen my enjoyment of the book (although I'd understand if someone else felt differently). Also, there are a couple of inconsistencies in the timeline that bug me, and Mori's backstory doesn't line up as seamlessly with what we learned in Watchmaker as I'd like (I had to do some mental gymnastics to make it fit and I'm still not totally satisfied), but I tend to notice stuff like that. I really wanted to know how Annabel was doing. Supporting her was such a constant worry for Thaniel in Watchmaker, and she was only mentioned briefly in Pepperharrow.I also listened to the audiobook for this, and I wouldn't unreservedly recommend it. I loved the audio for Watchmaker (I listen to it a lot actually), and I expected to love Pepperharrow since it's the same narrator, but he completely changed Mori's voice for Pepperharrow. He didn't give Mori a northern accent despite the text reminding us, and Mori's voice is no way deep enough, despite a bunch of allusions in about it. He performed Mori beautifully in Watchmaker. Other than that, the narration is good, so if a listener doesn't mind that, they'll enjoy it.
