Rebel at Spruce High is wonderful. I loved that Daryl Banner wrote a coming of age story in the Spruce Texas Romance series, taking a new kind of road in these wonderfully-written romances. Pairing the seemingly 'forgotten one' in Toby Michaels with the new kid in town, a bit rough around the edges with a less than stellar reputation preceding him, in Donovan Pane (known as Vann), I was enthralled almost immediately at their tentative kind of chemistry. Both are terrific characters on their own but together, the charm of their youthful awkwardness was downright compelling and I couldn't wait to see just how they maneuvered their senior year with everyone in this small-town watching.Being one of the longest books the author has written, I have to say that every word counted. We get both Toby and Vann's POVs and witness first-hand how their family life at home continues to affect how they both perceive others and themselves. It's those glimpses into the lives they lead that gives a great basis for the reasons they are attracted to each other. Each one looking for their voice, even when said voice might be too much for most or perhaps too quiet for others. And yet it doesn't seem to matter when they are together and their rough and uneven sides are suddenly smooth and flawless and the promise of more is within reach.I think what I loved most is that Banner didn't just give us the angst of two people simply trying to create and maintain a relationship as the main focus of this story. The influence each has on the other becomes quite profound as they want to be the best not only for one another but for themselves. The coming of age part is clearly what drives this book and gives it the richness I can't help but adore. Vann and Toby become the men they always were meant to be. They just needed to find the right person to love and perhaps find even a bit of help from the most unlikely of allies.As usual, we get some updates from previous couples in the series and their support is something that Toby, in particular, truly appreciates as do I. The fact that Spruce is such an accepting community adds the right vibe and is always a boost for these incredible love stories. Not to mention, secondary characters who add a bit of comic relief and hope for when things seem to be their most dire.Rebel at Spruce High is one of Banner's best yet and I look forward to what he has in store for us next in this entertaining, adorable, sexy, and heartwarming series.5 solid stars!
